Association for the Help of Retarded Children - AHRC

As life members of the AHRC Auxiliary and with loved ones as  clients of AHRC we wanted to
provide this space to let people know of the good work that this organization does.

Helen Keller once said, "There is no better way to thank God for your sight than by giving a
helping hand to someone in the dark."  AHRC provides that helping hand to over 3,000
individuals who benefit from the many programs and services they offer.

In the late 1940's there was no place outside of a state institution for people with mental
retardation.  A small group of parents, led by Helen Kaplan, banded together to change that
and AHRC's first programs began.  They dedicated their life to establishing
community-based programs offering opportunities for achievement and acceptance to
people who, for the most part, had been routinely relegated to institutions or hidden away at
home.  It was this determined group, that formed the beginning of AHRC - the organization
that has growth throughout Nassau County to meet the needs of individuals with
developmental disabilities throughout their lives.

There is an array of opportunities for you to help this organization remain a premier model of
success.  From volunteer work to auxiliaries, from donations to fun events, you can
participate to make the world a better place for those that need you most.
